Thursday February 24^th1994 started the way of many on a local paper; I went to the Bath Royal United Hospital to shoot a feature on disposable nappies.
As I was leaving the maternity unit a police officer arrived, and before I got to my car two police cars arrived.
I called the office to see if they could check what was going on, and decided to stay while they checked.
More police turned up and started searching the hospital grounds, and it soon became clear that someone had stolen a baby.
After a couple of hours the hospital set up a press centre and photographers started arriving from agencies and national newspapers.
In the early evening the police announced the baby had been found, a reporter, TV crew and one photographer could photograph the parents Andrew and Louise Waylen with baby Charlie.
Press association photographer Barry Batchelor said “you’ve been here from the start you do it.
When I came out of the hospital, we dashed back to the office and I processed the film.
Our picture editor Kevin Clifford sat and trimmed the film down into lengths of three frames and handed them to the different newspaper wire units set up in the newsroom.
Next day my picture made every paper from the Sun to the Times, while we were doing it Barry’s pager went off telling him that police had started digging in a garden in Cromwell street in Gloucester,
He said “the baby is more important at the moment, I'll do it tomorrow”.
Little did we know it was the start of the Fred West inquiry and how many bodies would be in that garden?
A final strange twist was that a few years after I went to photograph the woman that stole the baby who was appealing for help for others like her.

When I first went to this restaurant it was in 1982 and called Bunkers and was a war time themed restaurant, its been through a number of names and types of food establishments since.
I was booked to photograph the latest SOTTO SOTTO before Christmas and afterwards took my family to try it.
My Daughter was so impressed she wrote this review next day.

I think this is the most expensive car crash that I have ever photographed a Noble Super Car that left the A4 near Chippenham in October 2004.
For the non enthusiast a second hand Noble about 5 years old costs around £30,000 and a new one £50,000.

We took the Grandchildren to Bristol Pantomime on Friday,but visited the new Za Za Bazaar restaurant first.

It’s the biggest restaurant in the UK seating 1000, Weekday Lunchis £6.99 and weekday dinner is £12.99 for all you can eat from a selectionincluding Indian, Chinese, Tex Mex, Pasta, Piri Piri, Pizza and Italian.

In fact everything from Chicken Nuggets to TraditionalKashmir recipe of lamb chops simmered with onion, tomatoes and spices withgently crushed fennel, and sweets from around the world.

They have 40 chefs who seem happy to cope with anything evenmaking a gluten free risotto for Wendy.

If you just want a quiet candle lit dinner itsnot for you but if you want to have an incredible eating experience and letyour kids try food from all over the world I can thoroughly recommend it.

For most boys of my generation the dream of riding on the footplate of a steam train was the thing (I did it three times) but for me it was to go up a turntable ladder.
When I was shooting this picture 30 years ago there was no Health, Safety and falling off ladders legislation.
So they let me go up the ladder and entertained my youngest daughter while I did it.

Peter is in the RUH at the moment for heart surgery, acondition not helped by the loss of his shop.

He is hoping to reopen on a new site sometime later thisyear.

I never was a Waitrose customer (preferring to go where I can park easily and free) and I am certainly not going to start shopping there now.

This is me taking my own picture in a mirror.

In those days Polaroid B&W film had to be coated

with a gooey sort of lipstick to make it permanent.

But I used the 180 in the studio because flash

meters were as rare as hens teeth in those days.

Please note I have found out how to tuck my shirt in now.

I was sad to hear of the Death of Ken Russell, I first photographed Ken it the 70's when he was shooting "Savage Messiah" in the Abbey Church Yard just outside the family shop.
He had turned Shores Shoe Shop (later Binks Restaurant and soon to be the Roman Baths Cafe) into the Lartigue Gallery.

The terrible crash on the M5 reminded my that after 20 years working for newspapers I have photographed a number of crashes.

But since I parking my precious Lotus Europa upside down near Newton Abbot nearly 40 years ago.

I realised the importance of have to right stuff in the car to rescue trapped drivers.

Though the standard kit for photographers includes the florescent jacket (always useful if you have to change a Tyre at night) I also carry a full size crowbar.
One of the first thing fire crews do in a car crash is open the bonnet and disconnect the battery to prevent fire.
Though one day I may be stopped for going equipped for burglary I think its worth the risk.

When I think what a problem Bath floodlit rugby was to us at the Chronicle, we used to put two black and white films through put them both in the developer and take one out after 20 minutes, fix it and if there wasn't enough detail we would leave the second one for another 10 minutes.
Now with the Nikon D7000 working happily at 5000asa it's a pushover.

Something from our house is being donated to a museum and its not Sam, in our loft cleaning we came across a plastic Digicomp from the 1960s (Wikipedia) they are quite rare and sometimes fetch up to a $100 on ebay.

I contacted Kevin Murrell - Museum Director of The National Museum of Computing and found that they wanted it.

So its on the way to Bletchley Park to be housed in the same block as the Colossus one of the first program controlled electronic computers.

Polar Bears in Bristol

The polar bears at Bristol Zoo were a sad sight when I photographed them in August 1972, they were kept in a large white painted pit, no substitute for snow.

It was probably the one feature of the zoo that has attracted more than its fair share of adverse publicity.
Bears have bred here, but the pit itself was just that; a pit. The last two polar bears at Bristol, Misha and Nina, were put down in January 1992.

My Mothers sister Doris was a champion swimmer, a

Western Counties diving judge and President of the Bath Dolphins swimming club.

She was the first woman to swim from weir to weir in 1913

And the family were not happy when she appeared in the paper in her swimming costume,

Once a year David goes off to Tir-Y-Cwm in

Wales

for a walking weekend with his friends.
This year they walked to the wreckage of a Wellington Bomber that crashed on the 20^th of November in 1944.
It’s now a war memorial to the crew of 6 who died in the crash.

I looked into Roman Candles shop in Terrace Walk, Bath to meet Maisey, the latest member of staff.
She is a two month old spaniel and was more interested in running away with £3000 worth of camera than having her picture taken.
It reminded me of trying to photograph polo, one minute she was at the far end of the shop and next minute on my lap trying to bite me.
Not many sharp frames as she was much to fast for me, why not pop in to buy a candle and meet Maisey.

After ten days without the Internet I can belatedly update the blog, last Saturday Wendy and I had the pleasure of Photographing Mayor Making for the Cities Charter Trustees, this is a small sample from our 670 pictures.

Orange Broadband

You may wonder why my blog has not been updated recently, nearly a year ago I changed broadband supplier from BT to Orange to save £20 a month.
The broadband speed has never come anywhere near BT despite many e-mails and call to the help centre in India which are all charged.
The final insult came when they e-mailed last week to say they were upgrading my service and I would lose broadband for 10 minutes overnight.
Good to their word my broadband closed but failed to return next morning, I called India to be told there was a problem but I would get my service back in the evening.
Next day called support again it turned out to be in Ireland this time, a man explained about BT exchanged and said the engineer said there was a problem with my copper pair, I said the copper pair that I'm talking to you on now and he said the engineer was returning to the exchange next week.
I explained as a working photographer I needed my Broadband.
He assured me the people in India could fix it but he had no priority and took ten minutes to put me through where they spent yet more time to reconfigure my modem, still no luck so they said a supervisor would call, but they didn’t.
Called at the Westgate Street Orange shop in Bath where the staff showed total disinterest in my problem (no commission for them) and just said it could have happened with BT.
In short if you need broadband for work Orange appears to be the worst possible choice.

Its cleanup time for the river Somer in Midsomer Norton High Street

The river Somer rises in Chilcompton and flows through Midsomer Norton then joins with Wellow Brook and flows through Wellow before joining with the Cam Brook in Midford where it becomes Midford Brook which eventually joins the river Avon .
